Antibiotics for cats can vary between antibiotics used for humans and antibiotics solely used for felines and other animals. Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections as well as diseases. Many antibiotics for cats can be bought over-the-counter, but it is always advisable to seek veterinary advice before giving any medications to your cat. There are not any antibiotics for cats that will cure a virus infection since virus infections cannot be cured using antibiotics.

Cat Antibiotics for Urinary-Tract Infections

Urinary-tract infections are quite common in cats. A vet will usually prescribe a combination antibiotic for UTI's called Clavamox. Clavamox is specially designed antibiotic for cats, although the containing amoxicillin can also be given to humans, clavamox contains both clavulanate and amoxicillin. The antibiotic clavulanate suppresses growth of the infection, while the amoxicillin destroys the bacterial infection. Possible side effects of clavamox are loose feces, dizziness and nausea.

Amoxi-Tabs

Amoxi-Tabs, containing amoxicillin, are a broad-spectrum antibiotic for both cats and dogs. This particular antibiotic fights against several-bacterial based infections, such as E.coli, gastrointestinal-tract infections, bacterial dermatitis, soft-tissue infections and respiratory infections. These cat antibiotics should only be administered for a maximum of five to seven days, under veterinary advice.

Cat-Eye Infections

Terramycin is an antibiotic ophthalmic ointment used for a cat's eye infection. This particular cat-eye ointment contains both Polymyxin B and Oxytetracycline. The types of eye infections that this cat antibiotic medication treats are secondary bacterial infections and cat conjunctivitis. A prescription is not required for this particular feline antibiotic eye ointment, but veterinary advise should be sought to confirm the type of infection your cat may have.

Cat Ear Infection: Antibiotics

The type of antibiotics generally used for cat-ear, skin and yeast infections can come in the forms of ointments, creams and drops. There is a difference in type of antibiotic used on a cat for an inner- and outer-ear infection. A standard outer-ear antibiotic often contains anti-inflammatory, antipruritic and antifungal properties.

How to Administer Cat Antibiotics

Different antibiotics used for cats can be administered in several different ways. Some antibiotics should not be taken by your cat on an empty stomach, and other cat antibiotics must be taken on a full stomach. Cat antibiotics can be administered by syringe, capsule, tablet, liquid, drip and suppository.
